Spring Plant Sales

tomato plants for sale

Tomato babies that will be for sale at the Callaway Plant Sale, March 21-23 and our On Farm Plant Sale, April 12th.

The earth is waking back up and it’s really feeling like time to get planting again! We’ve been putting in spring crops these past few weeks like kale, cabbage, turnips, beets, carrots and lettuce. NOW is the time to get your summer garden beds prepped as well! We mow and tarp fields that were in winter cover crop about 4-6 weeks before planting our summer crops. We rely on cover crops to improve our soil naturally by adding organic matter back. It also holds the soil from washing away in big winter rains and cycles nutrients. Even if you don’t have cover crops like clover and oats planted, you can still put down tarps to kill those pesky winter weeds so you’ve got clean beds ready to go. We use silage tarps and old billboard tarps but for smaller areas you can use black plastic or tarps from a hardware store.

Now is also a good time to map out your garden so you know how many plants of each crop you want to have. Interplanting is a great strategy for small areas. Interplanting is fitting in smaller, faster growing crops beside/between larger plants. It saves space and can help deter pests. Examples include carrots beside tomatoes. Dill between cabbage plants. Arugula next to broccoli. The key is timing and proper spacing so the smaller plants don’t get crowded out.

The best ways to ensure a successful gardens is to start with healthy soil, that’s got the proper pH and nutrient balance, and to use healthy, strong plants. That’s where we can help! We have heaps of plant babes filling our greenhouse that are destined for your gardens.
